SOFA CUSHIONS DECORATING A ROOM

A plain sofa or chair can look more attractive once added a cushion or pillow as a decorative element. There are numerous cushion shapes that can decorate a chair such as square, rectangle, round, or a form of a mini bolster, depending on the shape of the existing chair and sofa. As a room accent, one can also choose a standard size cushion which is about 35-55 cm. However, it can be adjusted to the shape and size of the chair.

Cushions can decorate a chair with a playful motif and colours. The mix can be customized to fit the room’s concept. One can match a full-motif cushion with a plain matching colour, a contrast colour, or a different style full-motif cushion.

An ethnical themed interior or piece of furniture can be decorated by applying a cushion with traditional motifs such as batik, weaving, or ‘lurik’ (stripes). A room with a modern concept can be decked up with an ethnic motif cushion. However, for a more contemporary look, one can decorate with a few cushions: one with batik motif, one with bright colours, and matched with one contrast-coloured cushion.

Cushions or sofa pillows are not compulsory to the sofa in the living room or family room, but can be appealing in the bed room. It is usually elegantly placed on top of the bed or bed cover.

A few cafés or restaurants that have a lounging area, such as a family room, also decorate their sofas with cushions. Usually, eye catching motifs and colours are chosen according the concept of the café.

Here are a few tips on how to choose cushions:

  1. Choose a cushion that is made with comfortable material. The foam should be flexible and pillowy, covered with a cool-feeling cotton. Despite just a decorative element, comfort should still be prioritized.

  2. Adjust the cushion to compliment the room theme and design, such as ethnic, modern minimalist, or pop art.

  3. The size of the cushion should also take into account. If the sofa is quite large, a small cushion might not be proportional, unless it is balanced in quantity. Otherwise, a small size sofa should not be decorated with a standard size cushion that will fill up the area, leaving little space to sit on.
