Under the Losari Foundation, Batik Losari has started producing hand-drawn batik with natural dyes since 2006. “Omah Batik Jlamprang” is the first Losari Batik studio, located in Jlamprang, Gemawang village, Jambu, Semarang. Jlamprang is not a batik-producing area, but a plantation area since the Dutch era, which doing batik is considered something foreign. Along with the times, plantation businesses began to be abandoned and many residents, especially women, were forced to go to cities to get new livelihoods but most of them just 'drowned' in the competition in big cities.
One of the main focuses of Batik Losari is to give women new skills, so that they have a source of income near from home. As batik makers, we are very aware that we are not in a batik-producing area and our batik skills are still far from 'smooth'. For this reason, Batik Losari tries to find a 'unique identity' without ignoring the concept of Indonesian batik, which is 'using canting or stamps and malam panas’. For the decoration, Batik Losari chooses a simple philosophy, which is plants or objects around us. The coloring technique, again because farming is not something new, Batik Losari uses natural coloring. As a result, each piece of Losari batik cloth is unique with modern and rustic decorations in natural color shades.
After 14 years running, Batik Losari has two working studios now: Omah Batik Jlamprang and Omah Batik Losari. A total of 14 women of various ages have joined on their own initiative to increase their income for household needs. They work from Monday to Friday in order to still have time with family on the weekends. While working, they can still go home to take care of their children and household during their lunch break.
Our intention to this day is still the same, Batik Losari wants to continue to be able to preserve batik, especially those that use natural coloring, by empowering female residents who come from the surrounding. Therefore, the identity of Batik Losari is "women, culture, and nature”.
